Frequently Asked Questions

A stage 1 remap is a software based modification made to a vehicle’s ECU (Engine Control Unit), instructing the vehicle on how to draw more power from the stock hardware on the vehicle. A stage 1 remap can overwrite the stock software, allowing for higher power output, better performance and increased fuel efficiency without making any physical, hardware modifications to the vehicle, with no visual changes required.
Before enquiring about an ECU Remap, please read our Remapping Disclaimer for more information.

A stage 1 remap is a purely software-based modification, with the only modification being performed on the ECU. This allows the vehicle to use existing hardware to provide a higher level of power and performance. A stage 2 remap required hardware modifications, such as performance exhaust, cooling / intake systems, turbos and more. With this higher performance hardware, the vehicle will see an increase in power and performance at a higher level possible with just a stage 1 remap.

Remapping a gearbox can remove torque limiters, set from factory, which may limit the amount of boost to keep the torque within the set limits. By remapping a gearbox alongside an ECU, these limits can be exceeded, allowing for greater levels of boost and power.
Other benefits of a gearbox remap include instant paddle response, improved shift times, improved throttle blips, improved shift points and the feeling of a true manual mode on some models, when shifting can occur automatically even in manual modes.

An ECU remap may affect your vehicle’s warranty as some manufacturers will be able to see if a vehicle’s ECU has been modified during routine servicing. This will show as a software update, which may be against the terms of the manufacturer’s or dealer’s warranty.
Before enquiring about an ECU Remap, please read our Remapping Disclaimer for more information.

All remaps are tested to ensure they are within the limits the vehicle’s engine can handle safely, ensuring that the extra power is safe for your engine. We also test all vehicle engines before remapping to ensure the engine is in a safe condition to handle extra power and to ensure that the remap will give the best performance boost possible within the limits of the engine.

A dead spot is where a vehicle’s engine fails to perform a smooth increase in power, often when pulling away from a junction, with the vehicle feeling slow or unresponsive, then getting a sudden burst of power. This can cause significant damage to a vehicle’s engine over time, while also being dangerous to the occupants of the vehicle and other road users and should be resolved as soon as possible.

This depends on the company used for your vehicle insurance, however many insurers are now more accepting of modifications including ECU remaps on vehicles. We highly recommend informing your insurer of any modifications including ECU tunes as a policy may be revoked and a claim can be refused if this is not disclosed. Insurers hold the right to revoke or void an insurance policy if they discover a modification which is not disclosed at their own discretion.

No, an ECU remap will not affect your driver modes, such as ECO Mode, Sport / Dynamic as these are just settings. These settings are created by the vehicle manufacturer to make adjustments to the driving experience, usually limiting the maximum throttle when used, or the responsiveness of the gearbox. An ECU tune will not change these settings as such, however the increased power will show with different modes, with an ECO mode now having limited power, but higher than the pre-remap setting.

Yes, the majority of vehicles produce a lot below their tolerance and use a range of engine types with the same or very similar parts. With a stage 1 or stage 2 ECU remap, the full potential of the engine can be found, while keeping within the tolerance of the engine.

It is strongly advised that you use a higher quality fuel once having your ECU remapped as this will help with the ignition cycle and the combustion process. Low quality fuel will cause a pre-detonation which is bad, but can sometimes be resolved by using a high quality fuel with correct servicing. It is ok to use lower quality fuel for a short time, however it is not advised to use low quality fuel long-term as this may cause damage to your engine and effect performance.
EGR Delete North East

EGR Deletes in Teesside

An EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) delete removes a vehicle’s EGR filter, preventing used exhaust fumes from being redirected from the exhaust, back into the engine, causing a build-up of soot and potentially damaging the engine.

After a EGR delete your vehicle will no longer reuse exhaust gasses within the engine, therefore increasing the power and performance of the engine, while also reducing the chances of costly repairs being required due to a build up of soot within the intake systems.

DPF Delete North East

DPF Deletes in Teesside

A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) delete removes a vehicle’s DPF and configures the computer system to work correctly without it.

A DPF limits the performance and efficiency of your vehicle in a number of ways, storing soot from emissions within the exhaust, then using fuel to burn off this stored soot. With a DPF deletion, you will see an instant increase in both power and fuel efficiency, as well as adding to your vehicle’s life.

DTC Delete North East

DTC Deletes in Teesside

DTC Deletion, also known as P Code Removal, allows for error codes to be permanently removed from a vehicles ECU, very helpful when modifying the engine or ECU in any way which could show an error code, which could result in reduced power modes being activated when showing error codes, while the vehicle has no issues.

AdBlue Detele North East

AdBlue Deletes in Teesside

AdBlue is a chemical used in Selective Catalyst Reduction on diesel vehicles, with the sole purpose of reducing Diesel Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levels, reducing the power of the vehicle, but also increasing the running costs.

After an AdBlue deletion, the vehicle performance will increase, as well as the vehicle’s power when combined with an ECU Remap. Running costs of the vehicle will also be reduced due to no longer needing to purchase and use AdBlue to run the vehicle.

AdBlue Deletion is intended for off-road use only. Teesside Remaps hold no responsibility for any on-road use of vehicles modified to remove the need for AdBlue. Any fines, fees or restrictions placed against drivers using vehicles with an AdBlue Deletion by Teesside Remaps are the responsibility of the vehicle owner. Teesside Remaps are not responsible for any financial or physical actions against vehicle owners.

Gearbox Remapping North East

Gearbox Remapping in Teesside

One of the main reasons for remapping a gear box is the removal of torque limiters, set from factory, which may limit the amount of boost to keep the torque within the set limits.

ECU Remapping North East

How Does ECU Remapping Work

Engine remapping has been around since the introduction of the ECU (Engine Control Unit). Since the early 90s, most engines have been controlled by an ECU which controls a range of functions of the engine including: Ignition Timing, Boost Pressure, Fuelling and more.

By modifying the ECU (remapping), the default settings and controls set by the manufacturer from factory can be modified and overwritten, allowing for more power to be drawn from the engine, better fuel efficiency and overall better performance, allowing for a much more engaging feel within the vehicle.

All ECU remaps are different and the effects of an ECU remap are different for every make and model of vehicle, allowing for the full potential of the engine to be used as efficiently as possible, without exceeding the limits the engine can safely handle.

A stage 1 remap requires only the ECU to be modified and is completely software based, with no need for hardware or visual modifications to be made to the vehicle.

A stage 2 remap requires hardware modifications such as performance exhaust systems, intakes and turbos, allowing for much higher levels of performance upgrades.
